The Most Common Myths About

Pelvic Pain

You've Been Told By Doctors, Friends and Social Media That Have Led To More Pain

Here are some of the most common pelvic pain myths that people who visit our clinic in Livonia have been told, which have actually hindered their progress and delayed their recovery from the condition or injury.

MYTH #1 - Surgery Is The Best Option For Pelvic Pain
A common misconception among patients is that surgery is the ultimate solution for pelvic pain. While surgery can be necessary in some cases, it should only be considered as a last resort – after all other natural alternatives have failed. Many people don’t realize that there are natural, less invasive alternatives that can provide significant relief and long-term results. In the clinic, we use a variety of tools, including manual therapy, biofeedback, and customized exercise programs, to address the root cause of pelvic pain. Additionally, education and lifestyle changes – such as improving posture, managing stress, and modifying diet – can make a huge difference. For many patients, these approaches allow them to avoid surgery altogether and achieve lasting improvements without the risks or recovery time associated with invasive procedures.
MYTH #2 - Drinking Wine Will Help Make Pelvic Pain Go Away
Another myth I frequently hear is that drinking wine can solve pelvic pain. While a glass of wine might provide temporary relaxation to the pelvic muscles, it does nothing to address the actual problem. The relief felt is fleeting and the pain will quickly return shortly afterwards. In fact, relying on wine or other forms of dopamine-inducing “fixes” (the chemical released to activate the brain’s reward system) can delay the process of seeking real solutions. Pelvic pain is often complex, involving issues such as muscle dysfunction, inflammation, or even stress or anxiety. While relaxation is important, it’s better achieved through techniques like diaphragmatic breathing, mindfulness practices, or targeted physical therapy that addresses both the body and mind.
MYTH #3 - Medication Is A Long-Term Solution
Many patients believe that medication is the solution to their pelvic pain – either because the physician continues to prescribe it or that it is effective at dulling the symptoms temporarily. In most cases, medications only mask the pain and don’t address what’s causing it in the first place. To truly resolve pelvic pain, it’s essential to consider a holistic approach. This means thoroughly assessing the pelvic floor, identifying contributing factors like poor posture or muscle imbalances, and making lifestyle adjustments. For instance, improving ergonomics at work, incorporating pelvic floor exercises, and addressing dietary factors that contribute to inflammation can all play a role in recovery. By focusing on these root causes, patients can often reduce or eliminate their reliance on pain medication.
MYTH #4 - Rest Will Help
The idea that rest is the key to resolving pelvic pain is another misconception. While rest is important for recovery in certain situations, it’s not a complete solution. Prolonged rest can actually hinder progress by limiting circulation, reducing muscle function, and prolonging stiffness or tension in the pelvic area. Movement is essential for healing. In our clinic, we develop customized pelvic floor therapy plans to help patients incorporate gentle, guided exercises that can provide relief while also supporting the body’s natural healing process.
